PopHighlights: Video Editing, Piano Playing and Skateboarding in Singapore

PopHighlights is a new segment on PopConversation where we feature notable videos on the Singaporean Youtube- works, content and productions that are catching the attention of local audiences and gaining popularity in the online space.

The 3 videos on our list are particularly engrossing and they stood out for their competent execution and style.

1) REVELATION by thaZill

Youtuber thaZill has managed, through skilful video editing and a choice soundtrack, to make the biggest first person shooting military game, Call of Duty 4, look like a thriller/action movie. The art of creating such cinematics with a video game is known as machinima, and the craft enjoys a strong following of gaming fans, graphic animators and video editors on Youtube.

thaZill expertly synchronizes clips of Call of Duty 4 to the tension-filled music track with various video filters/effects, sharply timed cuts and video transitions- all of which makes for a cinematic and intense short that immediately draws you in regardless of whether you're into gaming or military shooters.

2) Set Fire to the Rain (Piano Cover) by Stantough

Stantough is a Singaporean musician who has been posting up videos of his piano pieces on Youtube since 2008. His latest cover of Adele's third top 5 hit song (on Billboard Hot 100) "Set Fire to the Rain" has been very well received by his audiences- testament to his experience and ability to faithfully reproduce the emotions of the power ballad with ease.

At over 825 views and 50 likes (as of 25th Jan 2012), we think that his video clearly deserves a little more attention, we recommend that you take a little time during your commute or after work to sit back, relax and zone out to this soothing melody.

3) Firdaus hits Orchard by pushme00

What do you get when you bring your skating and kickflips out of the skatepark and into the streets of Orchard Road? An entertaining video and run ins with security guards that's what. Skater Firdaus and his friends showcase their romp around the busy shopping district in a video where they grind and ollie to the tune of punk rock music.

We have to give props to the person who did the shooting and editing of the video, the low angles and use of fish eye camera lens adds an interesting perspective, and the 3 minutes long clip manages to capture the skill involved in and the essence of skateboarding.
