Soft rock is a genre of music that takes cues from rock music but it focuses on delivering a toned-down accent. Soft rock themed songs more commonly revolve around universal ideas like relationships, love, and everyday life; this genre of music favour the use of acoustic guitars and pianos in accompaniment with more softer style of singing.
PopConversation takes a look at 5 contemporary female Youtube singers and their songs, and we immerse ourselves in delightful sounding melodies.
1) Lyre Lyre Hearts On Fire (Original) by Inch Chua
Inch Chua is Popconversation's Top 5 Youtube Song Cover Artist of January and a singer-songwriter with many notable endeavours and contributions in our local music scene. Her passion in the creative industry (she studied art, plays multiple musical instruments and was formerly fronting an alternative rock band) and strong vocal skills has netted her considerable gigs like opening for Katie Perry and Vampire Weekend during their concerts in Singapore.
In her latest Youtube music video, Inch performs an original love song titled "Lyre Lyre Hearts on Fire", and she expresses her self reflective sentiments to her viewers.
2) Christina Perri - A Thousand Years (Cover) by wheatrainbows
"A Thousand Years", by Christina Perri (an American musician who's also known for her other hit, Jar of Hearts), is one of the songs from the romantic fantasy film (with shiny and half naked folkloric beings)- The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn. Female fans of the vampire werewolf human love triangle commended the song for its blend of heartfelt lyrics and emotive delivery.
Justin Bieber fan and jazzy voiced singer, Joie, does a soothing rendition of "A Thousand Years". The audio effects on the video are slightly overdone but otherwise, she did a good job on its recording and production!
3) Safe & Sound Cover (Taylor Swift + Civil Wars) by ohmycharly
16 year old Youtuber ohmycharly sings Taylor Swift's new single from the upcoming science fiction action drama, The Hunger Games, and she does a splendid job in producing a clear sounding cover with strong vocals. I was a little skeptical about the authenticity of her voice at first but her other video proved that she really had the goods.
At present, Safe and Sound is quickly gaining popularity online - debuting at No. 30 on the Billboard Hot 100.
4) Flaws - Bombay Bicycle Club cover by DropDeadKxy
Ko Xinyi, also known on Youtube by her alias "talktothewalls" and "DropDeadKxy", was selected for PopConversation's Top 5 Song Covers of January for her rendition of Price Tag. We feature the self taught guitarist and singer again for her pleasant sounding cover of "Flaws" by alternative folk rock band, Bombay Bicycle Club. It might be the plucking and the similar tempo, but I half expected Xinyi to switch songs to Inch Chua's "Lyre, Lyre, Heart's on Fire" as she was playing.
5) The One That Got Away - Katy Perry cover by Melina K
The One That Got Away is a mid-tempo pop rock ballad by recording artist, Katy Perry. The song talks about lost love and also features American cultural references such as Radiohead and Johnny Cash. The change of tone to that of a more serious one has earned Katy Perry many positive reviews for her song.
MelinaKDallas's stripped down version of The One That Got Away is very easy to listen to and like all the female songstress on our list, we're really proud to say that these girls are testament to how seriously talented the people in Singapore are!
Which of these 5 local lady singers are your favourites? Do you also have your own cover songs to share?
